The Epitome of a StepDaddy!

“Excuse me Scott, are you married?”

“No”

“Good, cause my mommy needs a husband”

This was the conversation nine years ago when my now husband came to my house to have dinner with me and my daughter for the FIRST time. The ground could have opened up and swallowed me whole! And all I could muster to say was “I did NOT tell her to say that!”

Katana was only five years old at the time and I managed not to choke on my homemade macaroni and cheese, broccoli and fried chicken….I still remember the exact meal πŸ™‚

I was a single mom at the time, having gone through a divorce from her biological father. I was dealing with all the emotions that comes with. I did not want a failed marriage. I did not want to be a single mother……didn’t want to be a stereotype. But I had a good career and I was determined to thrive and ensure that she did as well. Plus there was no need to dwell on what ‘didn’t’ work….it was what it was.

Scott and Katana 5

When Scott came into our lives, it was a while before he met Katana. I just believed that adults need to decide what they are going to do before children get involved. From the moment they met they have always had a very special connection. I saw it with him and I also saw she had the same connection with my father….her Papa.

Weird to say, but I felt as if I could give her everything within my power but I could not give her that connection or that special bond girls have with their father. She loved her Nana, but she looooved her Papa.

I don’t even know if it is articulable because both my sister and I are daddy’s girls.

school shenanigans

Anyway, Scott came into our lives and from day one (even as we ironed out the dynamics of our relationship), he was there! To give piggy back rides, pick her up from school, play video games, eat dinner, watch the first tooth get pulled, watch her ride her bike in ‘speed mode’ and fall and chip a tooth. To celebrate birthdays and every holiday, to be there for graduations and special events and to share their own father daughter dance at our wedding 5 years later πŸ˜‰

Family Vacation….

BALANCE……

This has been my area of improvement for a long time. Juggling the many hats I wear is a challenge. But I can say that when I took control of my clock and calendar, and became more intentional about what balance meant for me, I began to see results.

I’ve been wanting to make sure that I produced a blog every Monday. But for the longest I hesitated because I wasn’t sure I’d have something to write about every Monday. After some wise counsel from my pastor who reminded me that if I set some time aside to ask God what He wanted me to write about, He will give it to me.

So I created a note section on my phone entitled ‘blog’ and I asked πŸ˜‰ Well, He started giving me titles and stories and now it’s up to me to be consistent…..

Anyways, back to the balance thing. We are fresh back from family vacation/spring break and it was so relaxing πŸ™‚

I lurked for the sun every morning, slept with the balcony door open to hear the waves, enjoyed our away time and especially enjoyed watching my water babies have fun…

I have always loved the morning. Maybe because of it’s clean undisturbed freshness or the hint of promise everyday brings, I don’t know, but I love it!

Most of my mornings were also spent trying not to share my writing materials with this little early bird πŸ™‚

My daughter has always been a water lover and now her brother has followed suit. So it was a pleasure to watch them…

We had a refreshing time and baby boy and I took in a few more sights as baby girl and dad went off to see Batman vs Superman…

Had a great time and am looking forward to the next. I do believe baby Jason had the most fun time of all πŸ™‚

Have a great week and I pray you are doing all you can to ensure your life is balanced.

Blessings always.
